Abstract: 
The CMO's strategy for combating infectious diseases 'Getting Ahead of the Curve' led to the creation of the Health Protection Agency (HPA) but also identified that every microbiology laboratory had a public health role. This document clarifies the public health role that every NHS Microbiology Laboratory has to play and represents best practice guidance for the deivery of this aspect of their services
