Summary:
This Health Service Circular sets out a programme of action for the NHS to: -· Strengthen prevention and control of communicable diseases and infection control processes by securing appropriate arrangements for the control of hospital infection, improving quality of service provision through clinical audit and CPD, securing a safe clinical environment through high standards of hygiene in both clinical practice and the environment and including IC issues in service developments· Secure appropriate health care services for patients with infection by securing appropriate provision of isolation facilities· Improve surveillance of hospital infection by provision of appropriate laboratory services, surveillance data collection and use of data to inform practice improvements · Monitor and optimise antimicrobial prescribing The HSC is aimed at health authorities, primary care groups (now PCT’s) NHS Trust Boards, and regional Directors of Public Health working with Regional Directors of Performance Management. The guidance sets out a list of objectives/actions and the post holder who should initiate the actions and the timescale in which to achieve this.
