Annual epidemiological report 2011 - Reporting on 2009 surveillance data and 2010 epidemic intelligence data

Surveillance data
Abstract:
ECDC releases its fifth Annual epidemiological report, presenting the analysis of surveillance data reported for 2009 by the 27 EU Member States and three EEA/EFTA countries. The report provides an annual picture of the state of infectious diseases in Europe as well as an analysis of threats detected in 2010, and thus represents a useful tool for public health professionals and policy makers.   The major findings in relation to the collected data on infectious diseases are: the number of tuberculosis cases, the developing epidemic of measles, antimicrobial resistance and lessons learned from the pandemic of 2009 and 2010, among others. Furthermore, the report identifies emergent diseases that might pose a risk to public health in Europe, such as West Nile virus, malaria, dengue fever and chikungunya.
